APEC Ministers Responsible for Trade Statement of Chair

APEC Ministers Responsible for Trade Statement of Chair

• The Ministers Responsible for Trade (MRT) of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) met in Bangkok, Thailand, from May 21–22, 2022, under the chairmanship of Mr. Jurin Laksanawisit, Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce. The Chair's Statement provides the Chair's evaluation of the consensus views voiced by all APEC member economies over the course of the two-day meeting.

• The World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General, the Chair of the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC), the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC), the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and the Secretariat of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) all attended the meeting.

• On the current scenario, various points of view were stated. The forum expressed concern over the region's still fragile recovery from COVID-19, including global supply chain disruptions, inflation, food and energy crises, as well as the success of APEC's vision for an open, dynamic, resilient, and peaceful Asia-Pacific society.

• The importance of maintaining peace and security in our region, as well as upholding international law, was discussed, with the recognition that these are prerequisites for the inclusive and sustainable economic growth that APEC seeks.

• Recognizing the importance of trade in addressing the increasingly complex, cross-cutting difficulties that our economies confront today, the forum emphasized the necessity for concrete initiatives centered on the themes "Open. Connect. Balance." to realize the Putrajaya Vision 2040: Open to ALL Opportunities, Connect in ALL Dimensions, and Balance in ALL Aspects.
